North University of China is a high-level university known for its distinctive characteristics and innovative development, co-founded by the People’s Government of Shanxi Province, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense. It is managed by the People’s Government of Shanxi Province. The university's predecessor was the Taihang Industrial School, the first ordnance school established by the Eighth Route Army Headquarters in the Taihang Anti-Japanese Base Area in 1941. It pioneered the education of ordnance engineering for the people and is honored as the “First School of People’s Ordnance.”
In 1949, the school moved to Taiyuan. It was upgraded to Taiyuan Mechanical College in 1958. In 1963, it was placed under the direct leadership of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission, becoming one of the eight major national defense undergraduate colleges. In 1993, it was renamed North China Institute of Technology and was managed by the China North Industries Group Corporation, making it one of the “Seven Sons of Ordnance Engineering.” In 1999, it became a university co-founded by the central and local governments, with Shanxi Province managing it. The school was renamed North University of China in 2004. In December 2020, the Shanxi Provincial Committee and Provincial Government issued several opinions supporting the establishment of a “Double First-Class” university, encouraging the university’s leading development.
The school has always adhered to its original mission of “Educating people for the Party, training talents for the nation, and forging weapons for the military.” It insists on a socialist approach to education, comprehensively promoting the “three comprehensive education” reform and fully implementing the fundamental task of moral education. Carrying forward the red gene of the “First School of People’s Ordnance,” it focuses on cultivating talents as “Engineering Elites and Pillars of the Era.” Following the motto “Seek Knowledge Through Practice,” the school aims to deeply integrate itself into major national strategic developments and the transformation of the resource-based economy. The school has achieved remarkable results on its journey to establish a “Double First-Class” university.

The school has 42,500 full-time students, including 7,278 doctoral and master’s students. It has 17 national first-class undergraduate programs, 2 national excellent courses, 2 national quality resource-sharing courses, 17 national first-class undergraduate courses, 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 1 national college student cultural quality education base, 1 national engineering practice education center, 1 modern industry college (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), and 1 specialized and special new industry college (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology). The school has won 4 national teaching achievement awards and has been approved as a national model university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform and a national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base, ranking in the top 20 in the latest national university student competition rankings and among the top 100 universities in China for cultivating innovative talents.
The university has trained and delivered over 300,000 engineering elites and pillars of the era with “national defense heritage, international vision, solid knowledge, and innovative spirit.” Notable alumni include “Shell King” Zhen Rongdian, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Li Kuiwu and Huang Hui, and Liu Antai, a recipient of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The school has trained 12 generals for the People’s Army, with over one-third of its graduates contributing to key national fields and defense units, and 70% of graduates serving at grassroots levels. They live by the motto “Doing anonymous work, accomplishing world-changing tasks,” upholding their mission of building a strong nation and powerful military.
Distinctive Features and Flourishing Disciplines
The school has established a discipline structure led by national defense advantage disciplines, with coordinated development across multiple disciplines. It boasts 7 post-doctoral research stations, 9 doctoral degree-granting first-level disciplines, 4 doctoral professional degree categories, 26 master’s degree-granting first-level disciplines, 14 master’s professional degree categories, and 70 undergraduate programs. Twelve programs have passed engineering education accreditation. There is one national key (cultivation) discipline, 29 key (construction) disciplines in Shanxi Province, and 10 “1331 Project” first-class (advantage) disciplines and discipline clusters in Shanxi Province. Engineering, materials science, and chemistry rank in the top 1% globally according to ESI. The university actively serves national and regional economic development needs and adapts to the development of new technologies, industries, businesses, and models, forming the distinctive feature of “Serving National Defense, Serving Local Development.”
Talent Development and Outstanding Achievements
The school actively implements a strategy of strengthening the university through talent and shows strong development momentum in faculty construction. It has 2,927 faculty members, including 2,108 full-time teachers, of which 318 are professors, 718 are associate professors, and 70.87% have doctoral degrees. It has 72 high-level talents, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and foreign academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The school also has 44 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, 5 members of the National University Teaching Steering Committee, 20 experts from the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and other organizations, and 30 senior experts connected with the Central and Provincial Committees. The school has 18 national-level innovative talent teams and honorary collectives, and 25 provincial-level innovation teams.
Innovation Commitment and National Service
The school actively serves major national strategies, providing strong support for national defense innovation and economic and social development. It has 65 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms and has received 32 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards since the “14th Five-Year Plan,” including 9 first prizes in Shanxi Province. It has obtained 4.092 billion yuan in research funding and undertaken 447 national-level research projects, including 21 projects exceeding 10 million yuan.
