Hunan University of Chinese Medicine is located in Changsha, a city with a rich history and cultural heritage, and is a key undergraduate institution in Hunan Province. It was one of the first universities in China to establish nationally recognized key disciplines in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and among the first to admit doctoral students, international students, and students from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. The university currently has two campuses, Hengpu and Dongtang, covering an area of 1,018 acres. The university is comprised of 15 undergraduate colleges, as well as a Graduate School, International Education College, Continuing Education College, and Xiangxing College (an independent college). It operates 15 affiliated hospitals, including two directly managed, and 27 teaching hospitals. The current Party Secretary is Dai Aiguo, and the President is Yi Gangqiang.

The university originated in 1934 as Hunan National College of Chinese Medicine. In 1960, it became an undergraduate institution, known as Hunan College of Chinese Medicine. The Hunan Provincial Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine merged with the university in 1965 (it was restored as an independent institution in 1972), and in 1990, the former Hunan University of Science and Technology merged into Hunan College of Chinese Medicine. In 2002, it merged with the Hunan Provincial Institute of Chinese Medicine (which regained independent status in 2022). In 2006, the Ministry of Education approved its renaming to Hunan University of Chinese Medicine. The university began enrolling students in the first batch of Hunan Province’s undergraduate program in 2012, and it was selected as a high-level institution in 2018 for the "Domestic First-Class University Construction Project." In 2022, it was included in Hunan Province's "Double First-Class" initiative, which aims to build world-class disciplines. In 2020, it became a pilot school for the comprehensive reform of "all-around education" in Hunan Province, and in 2022, it was recognized as a "Model University for Party Building in Hunan." In 2023, the university won the "Hunan Province May Day Labor Award." The university completed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate education evaluation in 2023 and is making significant strides toward becoming a prominent academic institution.
