Wuhan Donghu University is a regular undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education. Founded in 2000, it was originally named the Donghu Branch of Wuhan University. In 2011, it was transformed and officially renamed Wuhan Donghu University. In 2012, it became the leading university for the first batch of the Hubei Provincial Higher Education Innovation Capacity Enhancement Plan (Hubei Provincial "2011 Plan"). In 2014, it was selected as one of the first pilot institutions in Hubei Province for the transition of local undergraduate universities into application-oriented universities, and it spearheaded the establishment of the Hubei Provincial Alliance of Application-Oriented Universities. In 2018, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching qualification assessment of the Ministry of Education with high quality, and in May 2025, it completed the Ministry of Education's new round of undergraduate education and teaching review and assessment.
The university currently operates two campuses: the Wuhan Campus and the Jiayu Teaching Reform Base. These cover a total area of 5,594.68 mu (approximately 921 acres), with a total building area of 1.05 million square meters. The campus architecture is classic and elegant, situated in a quiet and refined environment with a green coverage rate of over 80%. It has been recognized as a "Hubei Provincial Ecological Garden-Style School," awarded the title of "National Advanced Collective in Greening," and is celebrated as one of the most beautiful university campuses in China. Specifically, the Wuhan Campus is located in the University City of Jiangxia District, Wuhan, covering 1,496 mu with a building area of 550,000 square meters. The Jiayu Teaching Reform Base, located 60 kilometers from the Wuhan Campus, is situated at the Jiayu East exit of the Wuhan-Shenzhen Expressway. It is adjacent to the 4A-level scenic area of Guanqiao Village Group 8 (known as the "First Group in China") and covers 4,098.68 mu with a built-up area of 500,000 square meters. The total value of the university's teaching and scientific research equipment is 198 million RMB. The library holds a collection of 2.3768 million physical books and 2.534 million electronic books and journals.
Significant achievements in disciplinary and major construction. Adhering to the motto of "Great Virtue, Earnest Learning, Seeking Truth, and Innovation," the university is rooted in Hubei, oriented toward the central region, and reaches out to the whole country. It focuses on cultivating high-caliber applied talents with comprehensive development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education. Its educational model integrates ideological and political, scientific and humanistic, and physical and psychological qualities as the "main body," while practical ability and innovative spirit serve as the "two wings." The university comprises 11 teaching schools (departments), offering 44 undergraduate majors and 33 junior college programs across 9 major disciplines: economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art. It has a student population of 29,238 regular undergraduate and junior college students. The university boasts 1 provincial-level key (cultivated) discipline, 2 provincial advantageous and characteristic disciplines (groups), 7 Chutian Scholar designated disciplines, 2 national-level first-class major construction sites, 12 provincial-level first-class major construction sites, 1 national-level first-class course, 63 provincial-level first-class courses, 12 provincial-level excellent grassroots teaching organizations, 7 provincial-level teaching teams, 1 provincial-level reform pilot school, 4 provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, 5 provincial-level strategic emerging (pillar) industry talent cultivation plan undergraduate projects, 3 Jingchu excellent talent collaborative education plan projects, 2 provincial-level service outsourcing talent cultivation (training) bases, 2 provincial-level key experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 5 provincial-level internship and training bases. It has won 8 awards in the 8th and 9th Hubei Provincial Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards, including 1 first prize. The university's college entrance examination admission scores have consistently ranked among the top of similar universities in Hubei Province for many years.
Excellent faculty quality. The university currently has 1,426 full-time and part-time teachers. Teachers with senior professional titles account for 44.5%, and those with master's or doctoral degrees account for 96.2%. The faculty includes 25 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, special allowances from the provincial government, and young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the provincial and ministerial levels. There are also 23 doctoral supervisors, 85 master's supervisors, and 25 outstanding teachers who have received commendations at or above the provincial level.
Widely recognized quality of talent cultivation. The university attaches great importance to the cultivation of application-oriented talents. It has been approved for 135 industry-education integration and collaborative education projects by the Ministry of Education, ranking among the top of similar universities in the province. It has co-established modern industrial colleges with Seentao Technology, Qi-Anxin, Tarena International, and Beijing Xiangyu Aviation Group. It conducts joint educational programs with leading enterprises such as Datang Mobile Communications and Jinshixing. Furthermore, it has established long-term and stable internship and practical training bases with China Railway Group, Chinasoft International, Dongfeng Motor, Hubei Broadcasting and Television, Changjiang Daily, Wuhan Tongji Hospital, Wuhan Union Hospital, Hubei Sanhuan, Xianning Intermediate People's Court, Wuhan International Trade Group, and Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios. The university also jointly cultivates master's degree students with several well-known universities. In recent years, students have actively participated in various innovation and entrepreneurship practice activities, winning 4,455 awards in subject competitions at or above the provincial level, including 67 provincial and national awards in the China International College Students' Innovation Competition. Students have applied for and had 293 patents accepted, published 1,243 academic papers, and won 11 Hubei Provincial College Student Excellent Scientific Research Achievement Awards. A group of outstanding student representatives has emerged, including recipients of the "Star of Self-Reliance Among Chinese College Students," "Candidates for Chinese College Student of the Year," and "Changjiang Scholars." The graduate employment rate and employer satisfaction rate remain at the forefront among similar universities.
Steady enhancement of scientific research and social service capabilities. The university has established 4 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, 10 excellent young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation teams among Hubei Province's higher education institutions, and has been selected as a service system resource substation of the National Technology Transfer Central Center. In recent years, it has undertaken 32 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Fund, and the Humanities and Social Science Fund of the Ministry of Education. It has published over 190 academic monographs and textbooks, released 1,198 high-level academic papers, holds 1,084 authorized patents, and has won numerous honors, including Elsevier's Highly Cited Chinese Researchers, the Institute of Physics (IOP) Highly Cited Paper Award in China, and Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers Globally. Multiple scientific and technological achievements have been commercialized. Several research reports have received formal written instructions from central leaders, as well as leaders of the provincial party committee and the provincial government, making positive contributions to local economic and social development.
Extensive international cooperation and exchange. The university adopts various formats, such as Sino-foreign cooperative education, inter-university joint programs, and exchange student programs. It has established cooperative relationships with more than 30 universities in over a dozen countries, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia. It operates programs for student study tours, mutual dispatch of tuition-free exchange students, direct pathways from junior college to bachelor's degrees, and bachelor's to master's degrees. It actively introduces online courses from world-class universities and promotes the "Internationalization at Home" project, providing convenient conditions for students to expand their learning horizons, pursue postgraduate studies, and seek employment.
Remarkable achievements in Party building work. Provincial and national advancement meetings for Party building in private universities have been successively hosted at the university. It has won honors including National Demonstration University for Party Building Work, National Demonstration "One-Stop" Student Community in Universities, Hubei Provincial Advanced Grassroots Party Organization, and Hubei Provincial Grassroots Ideological and Political Work Reform and Innovation Demonstration Site. One school was awarded the Benchmark Department for Party Building Work by the Ministry of Education, and one Party branch was named a Model Party Branch by the Ministry of Education. At the 28th National Conference on Party Building in Universities held in December 2024, the university delivered an exchange speech as the sole representative of private universities nationwide.
Widely praised educational outcomes. The university has been honored with titles such as National Civilized Unit, National Civilized Campus, National Advanced Collective in the Education System, National Advanced Collective in Greening, National Demonstration School for Building a "Safe Campus," National Sports Culture Research Base, Hubei Provincial Advanced Collective in Comprehensive Management of Social Security, Hubei Provincial Demonstration School for Law-Based Governance, Hubei May Day Labor Certificate, Hubei Provincial College Student Entrepreneurship Base, and Hubei Provincial Outstanding Dispatched Unit for Rural Revitalization Work. Domestic mainstream media, including People's Daily, Guangming Daily, China Education Daily, Xinhua Net, People's Net, and Hubei Daily, have reported on the university's teaching, scientific research, and other endeavors 505 times.
