Chuxiong Normal University, a full-time undergraduate institution in Yunnan Province, was established in May 2001 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The university's origins trace back to the Provincial Zhennan Normal School, founded in 1936, and it holds a proud revolutionary tradition and distinctive expertise in teacher education. Located in Chuxiong City, the capital of the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, the university is about 100 kilometers from Kunming, the provincial capital. With convenient transportation and a picturesque campus, it provides an excellent environment for learning and growth.
In 2009, the university was awarded the title of "National Civilized Unit" by the Central Civilization Committee. In 2011, its "Ethnology" discipline was included as a key discipline under Yunnan Province’s "12th Five-Year Plan" for advantageous and characteristic disciplines. In 2014, it was designated as a national project institution under the Ministry of Education’s "Excellence in Primary Teacher Training Reform Program." The university was approved as a pilot institution for the transformation of local universities into application-oriented universities in 2015. In 2016, its "Education Science" discipline was included in Yunnan Province's First-Class Discipline (B-Level Plateau Discipline) Construction Project. The same year, it was recognized as a "Demonstration School for Core Socialist Values" by the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee. In 2017, it received the title of "National Civilized Campus" and gained qualification to enroll and train government-funded normal students in Yunnan Province.
The university passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation in 2018 and was approved as the construction unit for the "Yunnan Province Research Center for Moral Education of Primary and Secondary School Teachers." In 2021, it was one of two schools in Yunnan selected to enroll students under the province’s Special Plan for Outstanding Local Teachers. In 2022, its discipline "Marxist Ethnic Theory and Ideological-Political Education" was included in Yunnan Province’s First-Class Discipline Construction Program (New Discipline Development Plan). To date, the university has trained over 80,000 graduates and has consistently received top honors for employment and entrepreneurship outcomes among higher education institutions in Yunnan Province for 12 consecutive years.
The university enrolls full-time undergraduate students nationwide from 25 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. It currently hosts 15,181 full-time undergraduate students. With 10 secondary colleges, it offers 54 undergraduate programs, including 21 teacher education programs. These include one nationally recognized specialized major, two national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 11 provincial first-class construction points, and five provincial advantageous characteristic majors. The academic portfolio also includes one First-Class Discipline (B-Level Plateau Discipline), one provincial first-class discipline, and three provincially supported master's degree disciplines under development.
The university’s teaching and research achievements are significant. It has won a national second prize for teaching achievements, a provincial special prize, five first prizes, and three second prizes for teaching excellence. Students have secured 494 national and 1,537 provincial awards in various academic competitions. The university boasts seven provincial-level quality courses and 29 provincial first-class courses.
Chuxiong Normal University embraces a talent-driven development philosophy, recruiting high-caliber academics, including professors, associate professors, and PhD holders. Among its 791 faculty members, 654 are full-time teaching staff, including 74 professors and 184 associate professors, with 120 holding doctoral degrees. Faculty distinctions include national model teachers, provincial teaching masters, and several other provincial and national honors. The university collaborates with institutions such as Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University, and Kunming University of Science and Technology for graduate education, contributing to the development of 53 postgraduate students.
The university actively implements a research-focused development strategy, hosting 68 national scientific foundation projects, over 230 provincial research projects, and 1,700 other research endeavors. It houses various research and innovation platforms, including one provincial philosophy and social science research base, six provincial university key laboratories, and numerous school-level research institutions. Academic exchanges are facilitated through platforms such as the "Yanfeng Forum" and "Yanshan Scholars Lecture Series," alongside hosting numerous high-level academic events.
The university also emphasizes extracurricular education through its "Four-in-One" second-classroom education system. It supports 48 student associations and organizes approximately 400 annual events, including sports and arts activities. Innovation and entrepreneurship are fostered through dedicated platforms such as the "Student Entrepreneurship Park" and "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center." Students have excelled in competitions like the "Challenge Cup," "Internet+" Innovation Competition, and various entrepreneurship contests.
Internationally, the university collaborates with institutions in countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, Thailand, and Singapore, promoting academic exchange and cooperative education. Domestically, it partners with prestigious universities like Beijing Normal University and Nanjing University. Regionally, it works closely with local governments and businesses to create internship opportunities and integrate into local economic and social development.
