Dalian University has a history that can be traced back to the establishment of the Kanto University of Arts and Law in March 1948. On the eve of the founding of New China, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China officially approved the creation of a formal People's University—"Dalian University"—in September 1948. In July 1950, Dalian University was abolished, and its School of Engineering became an independent institution, renamed Dalian Institute of Technology. In December 1978, the Dalian branch of the Liao Dalian Municipal Committee was jointly established, and in November 1981, it was renamed the Dalian Branch of Dalian Institute of Technology. In November 1983, the People's Government of Liaoning Province officially upgraded the Dalian Branch of Dalian Institute of Technology to Dalian University. In November 1986, the original National Education Commission approved the collaboration between Dalian University, Dalian Normal College (founded as Kanto University of Arts and Law in March 1948), and Dalian Health School (founded as Dalian Health School in October 1950), with the name officially adopted as "Dalian University."
In April 1988, the Fifth People's Hospital of Dalian was merged into Dalian University as an affiliated hospital. In November 2005, Dalian Railway Bureau’s Dalian Hospital merged into Dalian University and was renamed Dalian University Zhongshan Hospital, while Dalian University Affiliated Hospital was renamed Dalian University Affiliated Xinhua Hospital. In December 2008, Dalian Railway Health School merged into Dalian University, and in 2012, Dalian University established the Dalian University Table Tennis Vocational and Technical School.

Over the years, it has inherited the red gene, continued the red bloodline, and remained committed to educating for the Party and cultivating talent for the country. The school has always upheld the motto "Civilization, Self-strengthening, Seeking Truth, Innovation" and promoted the "Seeking the Foundation, Seeking Truth, Striving for Excellence, and Building Strength" spirit of Dalian University. The university's strategy is to lead with Party building, focus on discipline construction, and prioritize internal development. It is committed to improving education quality, enhancing its capacity to serve the local community, and promoting high-quality development. Today, Dalian University has become a comprehensive local university offering a broad range of disciplines, including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and arts. It is recognized as one of the leading institutions in Liaoning Province.
The university covers an area of 1.15 million square meters, with a building area of 494,000 square meters. It has 26 colleges, 7 provincial key disciplines, 8 projects under the "Enhancing Core Competitiveness of Higher Education Institutions" program, 2 first-class provincial disciplines, and 1 discipline ranked in the top 1% globally in the ESI index (Clinical Medicine). It offers 15 first-level academic master's degree programs, 2 second-level master's programs, 9 professional master's degree programs, and has 67 registered undergraduate programs (55 recruiting programs). The university operates two Class III Grade A affiliated hospitals and has around 16,000 full-time students.
In 2004, the university was approved as a talent reserve base for Dalian city and has since been implementing a "Talent-Driven University" strategy with the "Jinpu Scholars" program. The faculty includes over 6,200 staff members (including those in the two affiliated hospitals). Among them, over 1,000 are full-time faculty members, with 53.16% holding doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 2 people recognized under the National High-Level Talent Special Support Program for Science and Technology Entrepreneurship, 2 special professors under the "Chang Jiang Scholars Program," 1 recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 selected for the National "Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents Project," 8 experts receiving the State Council Special Government Allowance, 1 National Teaching Master, and 3 members of the Ministry of Education Teaching Steering Committee, among others. In 2023, the university was included in the National "111 Plan" for Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction.
The university focuses on talent cultivation as its core mission and continues to deepen teaching reforms. It has been recognized with 36 national-level awards and bases, including 2 projects for new engineering education and the Excellence Program, 5 national-level specialty program construction points, 8 first-class professional programs, 14 national-level courses, and several national textbooks. Dalian University students have won 31 national-level awards and 279 provincial-level awards in the China International College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, ranking first in the provincial competition for seven consecutive years. Since its establishment, the university has cultivated over 100,000 high-quality applied talents.
The university has strengthened its research platform construction and created a high-tech innovation hub. It currently has 1 post-doctoral research station and 42 provincial and national research platforms. Dalian University has received 7 national science and technology awards, covering natural science, technological invention, and scientific progress, as well as nearly 100 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards. The university has been granted 1,186 patents, including 12 international patents, and is a pilot unit for the State Intellectual Property Office and a national technology transfer demonstration institution. In 2021, it was approved as a High-Value Patent Portfolio Cultivation Center in Liaoning Province.
Dalian University actively serves the strategic development of emerging industries in the region and collaborates with the local community. It is deeply involved in the development of software engineering, information science, chemistry, agriculture, clinical medicine, and humanities, helping to drive the "Two Advanced Zones" construction in Dalian, as well as advancements in information technology, software, manufacturing, materials, medicine, tourism, free trade, and modern agriculture.
The university has also strengthened its international cooperation, establishing partnerships with 140 institutions in 19 countries and regions. It has set up 2 Sino-foreign cooperative programs and collaborates with the University of Seychelles and the University of Comoros to run Confucius Institutes. It also works with Kobe University in Japan and operates an international cooperative hospital with China-Japan medical collaboration.
