Hainan Tropical Ocean University is a full-time public undergraduate provincial institution co-established by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Hainan Provincial People's Government, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, and Sanya Municipal People's Government. It is authorized to grant master's degrees by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, and is designated as a doctoral degree-granting institution by Hainan Province. The university is located at the southernmost point of China and is the only tropical ocean university in the country. It is an important base for knowledge innovation, social services, cultural heritage, and international exchange, especially in the fields of marine science, tourism, and ethnic culture.
The university traces its origins to the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Normal School founded in 1954 and the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Normal College established in 1958. Through various mergers and name changes, the institution evolved into Qiongzhou University (specialized college) in 1993. In 2006, it was upgraded to a full university and renamed Qiongzhou College, incorporating Hainan National Normal School. The university expanded further by establishing a Sanya campus in 2008. In 2015, it became Hainan Tropical Ocean University, filling the gap of a dedicated marine university in the province. In 2018, it received approval to grant master’s and doctoral degrees, marking a significant leap in its academic development.
The university spans two campuses, in Sanya and Wuzhishan, covering an area of 2,188.1 acres. The campus has a total building area of 758,000 square meters and state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. The university offers 57 undergraduate programs, 7 specialized programs, and has developed a strong emphasis on marine sciences and ocean-related industries. It has 19 departments and institutes, with specializations in marine science, ocean engineering, tourism, and environmental sciences. Additionally, it hosts a variety of research centers, including national-level research platforms, providing strong support for scientific advancement and high-quality talent development.
The university’s faculty consists of over 1,600 staff, including numerous experts recognized by national and provincial government programs. Its students have excelled in numerous national and international competitions, securing awards in areas such as marine robotics, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The university places a strong emphasis on enhancing the quality of its education and cultivating a global talent pool.
With a focus on "Education for the Strong Nation" and a commitment to technological and scientific advancement, Hainan Tropical Ocean University has become a key player in marine research and education. It is continuously building international collaborations, hosting forums, and engaging in overseas academic exchanges, offering students opportunities for global exposure. The university’s international partnerships span 65 countries and regions, including exchange programs with universities in countries along the "Belt and Road."
Guided by Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the university aims to contribute to the development of Hainan’s Free Trade Port and to build itself into a top-tier, internationally recognized institution, leading the way in marine education and research.
