О Университете

Harbin Institute of Physical Education (HIPE) was established in 1956 and has since developed into a prominent higher education institution specializing in winter sports, with a well-balanced academic structure, coordinated professional development, and remarkable achievements in teaching, research, competitions, training, and social services. It is a key training base for winter sports talents in China and an institution that has been evaluated as excellent by the Ministry of Education in undergraduate teaching assessments. The university is also authorized to award doctoral degrees in the field of Physical Education. HIPE is under the administration of the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Education, with over 6,000 full-time students enrolled.

The university covers a total area of 2.781 million square meters, with a building area of 174,800 square meters. It consists of the main campus in Harbin and the Shangzhi campus, which includes the teaching and training base and a ski resort. Currently, the university employs 633 staff members, of whom 229 hold senior academic titles, 105 have doctoral degrees, and 325 have master’s degrees. HIPE has established an integrated talent training system that includes secondary vocational, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. It offers a doctoral program in Physical Education with four major research directions: Sports Sociology, Sports Science, Physical Education and Training, and Traditional Ethnic Sports. There are 25 doctoral advisors, as well as a master’s program in Physical Education with seven specializations: Sports Sociology, Sports Science, Physical Education and Training, Traditional Ethnic Sports, Sports Rehabilitation, Winter Sports, and Sports Arts. The university has 151 master’s supervisors and 12 undergraduate programs, including Physical Education, Sports Training, Martial Arts and Ethnic Traditional Sports, Sports Science, Social Sports Management, English, Journalism, Dance Performance, Sports Rehabilitation, Leisure Sports, Sports Economics and Management, and Winter Sports.

HIPE is home to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Education Development Center in Harbin, one of only two such centers in the world, and operates the China Snow and Ice Information Research Center in collaboration with the General Administration of Sport of China. It also hosts the only postdoctoral research station in the country focused on winter sports. The university has built a comprehensive talent training model combining teaching, research, competitions, training, and social services.

The university remains committed to特色办学 (developing a distinctive educational model), enhancing its core competitiveness, and strengthening its sports team construction. Over the years, it has produced world-class winter sports talents, including athletes like Luo Zhihuan, Wang Jinyu, Liu Fengrong, Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo, Wang Meng, Wang Manli, Yu Fengtong, Zhang Dan, Zhang Hao, Liu Jiayu, Zhang Yiwei, Cai Xuetong, Fan Kexin, Zang Yize, Jin Boyang, Sui Wenjing, Han Cong, Wang Bingyu, Liu Yin, and many others. It has also trained top-level domestic coaches, such as Pan Liquan, Ren Liheng, Chen Can, Fu Wei, Wang Fuquan, Wang Benyu, Zhou Yan, Yue Qingshuang, Liu Rui, Fan Hongwen, Yu Jing, Zhang Xin, Sui Baoku, Yang Chunyu, Wu Dawei, Gao Fan, and others. HIPE has become a major talent training base for winter sports in China. The athletes trained by the university have contributed 10 Olympic gold medals (as of now, China has won 22 Olympic golds in winter sports). The university was honored as one of the first training bases for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, making it the only university training base outside Beijing.

During the preparation for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, 96 students and faculty members from HIPE supported the games. The university achieved a full coverage of talents for the seven major Olympic disciplines, contributing to the Olympics' success with 3 golds, 2 silvers, and 2 bronzes, as well as 12 golds, 6 silvers, and 10 bronzes at the Paralympic Games. The university's talent contribution rate ranked first among all sports universities in China. In April 2022, the university was awarded the honorary title of "Outstanding Contribution Group" for its work with the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council. Additionally, the university's coaches and staff, including Zhu Dewen, Yue Qingshuang, Li Jianrui, and Zhao Ran, received personal honors for their contributions.

As of now, HIPE’s athletes have won 12 Olympic gold medals, 32 World Championship golds, and 44 World Cup golds, along with 991 total championships, 858 second-place finishes, and 778 third-place finishes.

The Shangzhi campus (Maoershan Alpine Ski Resort) was established in 2004 and served as one of the main venues for the 2009 Harbin 24th Winter Universiade. It hosted the snowboarding and biathlon events of the 29th Winter Universiade and has now become a hub for teaching, research, competitions, training, and social services related to snow sports. The campus is recognized as a national training base for snowboarding U-shaped field skills and as a China University Snow Sports Training Base. Its state-of-the-art facilities and winter sports expertise have contributed significantly to the high-quality development of winter sports in China, the "ice and snow economy" in Heilongjiang Province, the national team’s preparations for the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics, and the implementation of the "Three Billion People Participating in Winter Sports" initiative.

At the new historical starting point, HIPE is committed to continuing its motto of "Upholding Virtue and Courage, Seeking Knowledge and Practice." With unity and determination, it aims to become a leading, internationally recognized institution specializing in winter sports and contribute to the strategies of strengthening education, sports, and public health in China, as well as to the high-quality development and sustainable revitalization of Heilongjiang Province.
