University of Henan Kaifeng Technology & Media was founded in 2003, originally known as the Henan University Minsheng College. In 2009, Henan Daily Newspaper Group and Henan University formed a strong partnership to jointly run Minsheng College. In February 2021, the school was approved by the Ministry of Education to change its name and be re-established as Henan Kaifeng Technology & Media University.
Over the past two decades, the university has produced nearly 60,000 outstanding graduates for the country and society. It is ranked fifth in the national comprehensive ranking of private universities in China by Soft Science. The school upholds its motto "Virtue, Excellence, Thoughtfulness, and Action," its school spirit of "Striving for Excellence and Competitiveness," and its academic style of "Daring to Surpass and Striving for Self-Improvement," which has earned widespread social recognition for its quality of education.
The university currently has two campuses. The Jinming Avenue campus covers an area of 501 acres and is located in the middle section of Dongjing Avenue in Kaifeng, near the Jinming campus of Henan University. The Fuxing Avenue campus covers 1,370 acres and is located in the western section of Dongjing Avenue, 7 kilometers away from the old campus. The university is well-equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories, and libraries, as well as an open sports hall, swimming pool, standardized dining halls, and student apartments with central air conditioning and hot showers.
The university has over 20,000 students, all of whom are undergraduate students. It has 12 departments, including the School of Communication, School of Integrated Media, School of Information Engineering, School of Design, School of Arts, School of Economics, School of Business, School of Humanities, School of Marxism, School of Foreign Languages, School of Medicine, and School of Sports. The university offers 43 undergraduate majors across nine disciplines: arts, science, engineering, economics, management, law, medicine, education, and the arts.
The university is home to two key disciplines in Henan Province (2023-2027), four "First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Points" in Henan, two "Comprehensive Reform Pilot Majors" in Henan, seven "Brand Major Construction Points for Private Higher Education Institutions in Henan," and 11 "Disciplinary and Major Development Funding Projects for Private Higher Education Institutions in Henan." It has also been approved for two provincial-level engineering and technology research centers, one provincial-level engineering research center, one provincial social science research base, and five municipal-level technology innovation platforms.
In 2023, the university was granted approval to award master's degrees and was honored with the title of "Civilized Campus" by Henan Province.
The university places great emphasis on cultivating the innovation abilities of applied talents, offering guidance based on individual student needs, knowledge, and professional strengths. It has created a high-quality employment system where all staff members contribute to improving student employment competitiveness. The university has introduced measures such as "Teacher Performance Evaluation" and "Teacher-Specific Strategies" to improve teaching quality and enhance students' practical abilities.
To improve students' practical skills and comprehensive qualities, the university offers distinctive education. Every academic year, it offers short-term courses with a focus on individualized development and differentiating teaching content. Since its implementation in 2019, the short-term courses have played an active role in enhancing students' hands-on skills, job adaptation abilities, and social adaptability.
The university requires all students to take compulsory swimming and CPR courses upon enrollment, ensuring that "everyone can swim" and "everyone can perform first aid." The school has also built a health trail around the campus, encouraging students to complete a weekly exercise routine around the campus.
In the past three years, the university has won nearly 2,000 provincial and national awards in various national academic competitions, including the National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, China Robotics Competition, National Mathematical Modeling Competition, National "NXP" Cup Intelligent Vehicle Competition, National College English Competition, and National College Student Microfilm Festival.
The number, proportion, and quality of the university's graduate school admissions are among the best in the country, ranking high among similar institutions. Since 2018, the number of graduates entering graduate schools each year has exceeded 600, with over 800 in the past two years. In 2023, 841 students entered graduate schools, and 874 students in 2024. In recent years, many outstanding graduates have been admitted to top domestic universities, including Peking University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nankai University, Central South University, and Lanzhou University. In addition to graduate school admissions, many graduates also pass national civil servant exams and secure positions in public institutions. Many others voluntarily choose to work in grassroots areas, teach in remote regions, or join the military.
The university plays an active role in serving society and the economy of Henan, providing think-tank support for local development. In 2021, it established the Rural Revitalization Big Data Research Institute, the first of its kind in Henan Province, which applies big data to the precise study of rural revitalization. Cultural projects designed by the university's faculty have become local internet celebrity spots.
Adapting to the demands of media integration and technological innovation, the School of Technology and Communication is actively advancing toward its goal of becoming a national first-class, high-level, application-oriented university with a focus on "Technology and Media," working to cultivate outstanding talents who are devoted to the country and committed to innovation and creation.
