Founded in 2001, Nanchang Jiaotong University(formerly Institute of Technology, East China Jiao Tong University) is a full-time undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education. At the end of 2020, the university was officially restructured and renamed Nanchang University of Transportation with approval from the Ministry of Education, becoming one of the first batch of successful restructured universities in Jiangxi Province. Currently, the university primarily offers undergraduate education, alongside some associate degree programs, continuing education, and skill training. It also collaborates with East China Jiaotong University in five graduate programs related to architecture and civil engineering, transportation engineering, mechanical engineering, accounting, and translation.

Of the undergraduate programs, 32 are in engineering and management (76% of the total), forming a pattern of engineering-focused programs with a combination of engineering and management disciplines, with notable advantages in transportation, intelligent manufacturing, and electronic information fields. Since its restructuring in 2020, the university has been approved for 1 provincial-level first-class undergraduate program, 10 provincial-level first-class courses, and 15 provincial-level teaching reform research projects. Courses such as Intermediate Financial Accounting and Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Cultures were selected as "Gold Plan" demonstration courses by the Ministry of Education’s Online Education Research Center.
