Overview & Location
Southwest University of Science and Technology (SWUST) is located in Mianyang, Sichuan Province—known as the Science and Technology City of China. The university is co-constructed by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, as well as the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence. It has been designated by the Ministry of Education as one of the 14 key universities for development in China's western region.
Former Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, Comrade Li Lanqing, praised the university for forging a distinctive educational path through "co-construction and regional joint education combining production, teaching, and research." The current Party Secretary of the university is Yang Junhui, and the President is Huang Qi.
History & Campus Facilities
SWUST originated from the Chongqing First Civil Engineering School and the Southwest Institute of Architectural Engineering, both founded in 1952, and the Chongqing Architectural Engineering School, which was formed by their merger. The school historically operated in three locations: Chongqing, Shimian, and Mianyang. In 1978, the Sichuan Institute of Building Materials Industry relocated to the former site of the Mianyang Branch of Tsinghua University, absorbing some of the branch's staff and educational resources. It was renamed Southwest Institute of Technology in 1993. In 2000, the former Southwest Institute of Technology and Mianyang College of Economy and Technology merged to establish the Southwest University of Science and Technology.
