Founded in 1940, Chongqing University of Technology (CQUT) originated as the Eleventh Vocational School under the Ordnance Department of the Nationalist Government (known externally as Shiji School). Its first president, Mr. Li Chenggan—praised by Premier Zhou Enlai as a "national treasure of the ordnance industry"—also served as the first director of the State Bureau of Metrology of New China. Born out of the War of Resistance and thriving on its ordnance heritage, the university is one of the renowned "Seven Sons of Ordnance" in China. Today, it is a key university under the construction of Chongqing Municipality, recognized as a high-level "new engineering" institution, and the only ordinary undergraduate university in Southwest China with an ordnance background.
Located in Chongqing, the university spans three campuses: Huaxi, Liangjiang, and Yangjiaping, covering a total building area of 1.06 million square meters. It houses over 30,000 full-time students, including more than 6,000 postgraduate students and international students. The Huaxi main campus, blending elegance with natural scenery, has received accolades such as the First Prize for Excellent Planning and Design by the Ministry of Education, "Chongqing's Top Ten Garden-style Units," and "Chongqing’s Most Beautiful Winter Campus."
Academic and Disciplinary Strength
With the philosophy of "engineering as the core, science as the foundation, and humanities as empowerment," CQUT has established a balanced academic structure spanning engineering, science, management, economics, law, medicine, arts, and more. The university aligns closely with Chongqing's "416" science and technology innovation plan and the "33618" modern manufacturing cluster strategy. It offers one first-level doctoral discipline, one professional doctoral degree, and has 14 municipal key disciplines under the 14th Five-Year Plan. With 16 first-level disciplines and 14 professional degree categories, fields such as engineering, materials science, and chemistry rank among the top 1% globally in ESI. Among its 58 undergraduate programs, 11 are designated as national-level first-class programs, 4 are featured programs, and 2 are pilot programs for comprehensive reform.
Innovative Talent Development
Upholding the motto of "physical and mental health, comprehensive development, moral and intellectual advancement, and unity of knowledge and action," CQUT emphasizes industry-education integration and collaborative education. It hosts national-level platforms such as a modern industry academy, virtual teaching centers, and off-campus practice bases. The university has received three national teaching achievement awards and has been highlighted for its ideological and political education efforts by outlets like Guangming Daily and the Ministry of Education. Over 150,000 outstanding graduates have contributed to national development, earning CQUT recognition as one of the "Top 50 National Universities for Graduate Employment" and a "Model Unit for Graduate Employment and Entrepreneurship in Chongqing."
A Talent-Driven Strategy
CQUT prioritizes talent cultivation, gathering over 300 high-level talents, including recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, Changjiang Scholars, internationally renowned mathematicians, and provincial-level leading academics. The university hosts platforms such as the Chongqing Talent Management Reform Pilot Zone and Chongqing Overseas Talent Workstation. Recognized as an "Advanced Collective for Overseas Talent" and an "Outstanding Talent Work Unit" in Chongqing, it continues to expand its talent network.
Leading Research and Innovation
Adhering to its motto of "reaching the peak, delving deep, and advancing to the forefront," CQUT boasts 53 provincial and ministerial research platforms, including key laboratories and international collaborative research centers under the Ministry of Education. It is also a base for technology transfer and a national pilot for intellectual property innovation. Recent achievements include four National Science and Technology Progress Awards, one National Technology Invention Award, and multiple national patents. With 17 authorized international patents and 940 effective domestic invention patents, CQUT has ranked among the top 50 universities nationally for patent commercialization. Signature innovations, such as the Nano Grating Precision Measurement Technology, have been hailed as "China’s Precision" and showcased in major exhibitions like the "13th Five-Year Plan Scientific and Technological Achievements Exhibition."
Global Partnerships and Industry Integration
CQUT maintains close ties with domestic universities and enterprises, forming strategic partnerships with institutions like Beijing Institute of Technology and China Ordnance Science Research Institute. It collaborates with global universities and organizations from over 20 countries, participating in initiatives such as the Belt and Road University Alliance. The university is a founding member of the West Land-Sea Corridor Intellectual Property Alliance.
A Vision for the Future
Since 2023, CQUT has welcomed high-level inspections from the State Council, the Ministry of Education, and Chongqing municipal leaders, earning praise for its achievements. Chongqing Party Secretary Yuan Jiajun encouraged CQUT to "scale greater technological heights and become a beacon of innovation." Guided by its motto of "Morality and Action, Self-Reliance and Renewal," CQUT is committed to deepening its integration of industry-education-research and advancing its national defense technology focus. Striving for "first-class disciplines" and a "model for technological universities in Chongqing," CQUT aims to become a world-renowned, high-level applied research university.
