About University

Guilin University of Technology is a key university jointly built by the central and local governments, with the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region taking primary responsibility for its management. The university originated from the establishment of Guilin Geological School in 1956 by the former Ministry of Heavy Industry, followed by several changes in affiliation and school name. In 1978, it was renamed Guilin Metallurgical and Geological College, in 1993 it became Guilin University of Technology, and in 2009, it officially adopted its current name. Qu Jiuhui, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and member of the National Environmental Advisory Committee, serves as the university's honorary president.

After more than 60 years of development, the university has become a comprehensive institution primarily focused on engineering, with eight academic disciplines: engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, art, and agriculture. It has a well-rounded educational system that includes graduate, undergraduate, higher vocational, international, and adult education programs. The university fully implements the party's educational policies, adheres to the motto “Virtue and Knowledge, Practical and Innovative,” and upholds the spirit of “Hard Work, Professionalism, Teamwork, and Innovation.” It emphasizes student-centeredness, quality-oriented education, and technology-driven development. The university focuses on serving national and regional development needs, particularly in the natural resources and industrial sectors, and has achieved a number of notable outcomes in talent cultivation, scientific research, and social services.

The university operates four campuses: Pingfeng, Yanshan, Anji in Nanning, and Konggang in Nanning, with a total campus area of more than 3,300 acres.

Currently, the university has 21 academic departments, 3 post-doctoral research stations, 6 doctoral degree programs, 37 master’s degree programs, and offers undergraduate programs in 68 fields, along with 40 vocational programs. The university enrolls over 46,000 full-time students.

The university employs more than 3,300 staff, including 923 senior professionals and over 100 doctoral advisors. There are more than 40 national-level high-level experts, including recipients of the National "Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand" Talent Project, and over 90 provincial and ministerial-level high-level talents, including “Baguixue Scholars” and other distinguished titles. The university has also invited Nobel laureate Harold Kroto as an honorary professor, along with numerous academicians and renowned scholars from China's two academies and other prestigious experts as guest professors.

Guilin University of Technology is a part of the Ministry of Education's second batch of "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan" universities, with 7 disciplines and 5 undergraduate programs included in the plan. Five disciplines, including materials science, chemistry, engineering, environmental ecology, and earth sciences, rank in the top 1% worldwide in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators). The university currently has 21 national-level first-class programs, 16 provincial-level first-class programs, 11 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, and 69 provincial-level first-class courses. Fifteen of its programs have passed engineering education accreditation, and 2 programs have international accreditation. The university has received 28 national-level teaching project awards, including 2 national teaching teams, 1 course demonstration teaching team, 2 experimental teaching demonstration centers, 4 excellent courses, 1 bilingual course demonstration, 3 online video courses, and more. The university also has 130 provincial-level undergraduate teaching quality project awards.

The university has made substantial contributions to fostering innovative talent. Its graduates are highly recognized for their solid professional foundations and practical skills, with an initial employment rate consistently exceeding 90%. The university has been honored for its employment efforts, receiving the “National Advanced Collective for Graduate Employment” award in 2009 and the “First Batch of Advanced Collectives Promoting Employment in Guangxi” award in 2023. The university also has recognized innovation and entrepreneurship platforms, such as its innovation and entrepreneurship base, which has been designated as a national-level practice base for entrepreneurship education. It has received multiple awards for its students' achievements in various national and international competitions, including 220 national-level awards and more than 5,680 provincial and ministerial-level awards.

The university has a strong teaching and research infrastructure, with 1 collaborative innovation center, 1 national key laboratory cultivation base, 1 Ministry of Education key laboratory, and numerous other research centers and labs. It has received over 2,700 national and provincial-level research projects, with annual research funding exceeding 200 million RMB since 2018.

The university has a rich history of scientific achievements. In 1987, it won the National Science and Technology Progress Special Prize; in 2011, it received the National Technology Invention Second Prize. In 2024, it received the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize. Over the past five years, it has won more than 70 provincial and national scientific and technological awards. The university has contributed significantly to major projects like the "China Sky Eye" and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. It is a leader in areas such as green building materials, water pollution prevention, disaster reduction, and tourism planning.

Guilin University of Technology has established partnerships with over 100 universities in 30 countries and regions and has sent over 2,000 students abroad for academic exchanges and studies. The university is also well-regarded in the jewelry sector, with its Royal Gemstone Association exam center having the highest pass rate globally for several years. It has received over 6,600 international students and has made significant contributions to the Chinese language proficiency of international students, with an average HSK pass rate above 95%.

The university continues to thrive under strong leadership, earning numerous national and regional honors, such as “Advanced Party Organization,” “Outstanding Collective in the National Education System,” and “National Model Staff Home.” It is a demonstration school for various reforms, including party building, school governance, and comprehensive educational innovation.
