Kunming University is located in the Kunming Area of the China (Yunnan) Free Trade Pilot Zone (Kunming Economic and Technological Development Zone) and occupies a total area of 2,439.18 acres. It was established in May 2004 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The university was formed by integrating high-quality educational resources from Kunming University and Kunming Normal College. In 2023, the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education and the Kunming Municipal Government signed an agreement to jointly support the development of the university.
The university’s educational history dates back to 1906 when the Yunnan Higher School’s Teacher Training Department was founded. It has since gone through several transformations, including being the Yunnan Provincial Normal School, Yunnan Provincial First Normal School, Yunnan Provincial Kunhua Normal School, and Kunming Normal School. The university, now over 100 years old, has a rich educational legacy. Notably, from 1927 to 1930, the composer of the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China, Nie Er, studied at Yunnan Provincial First Normal School and is one of Kunming University’s distinguished alumni.
Kunming University was authorized to grant bachelor's degrees in 2008, passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation in 2012, and completed a teaching audit in 2018. In the same year, it became eligible to grant master’s degrees. In 2021, it was selected for the construction of a doctoral degree-granting institution under Yunnan Province’s project. In 2014, it became one of the first universities in Yunnan to pilot the transformation into an application-oriented institution. It was later recognized as a model application-oriented university in Yunnan and became the first chairman institution of the Yunnan Province Application-Oriented University Alliance in 2017. The university was awarded the title of "National Civilized Unit" in 2015 and successfully passed two subsequent reviews in 2017 and 2020. Through the hard work of its staff and faculty, Kunming University has grown into a comprehensive and application-oriented institution with considerable strength.
Faculty and Talent Development
The university inherits the "Nie Er Spirit" and follows the educational philosophy of "Cultivating Virtue, Pursuing Truth, Expanding Knowledge, and Practicing Diligently." Its motto, "To Cultivate Virtue, Achieve Excellence, and Serve Society," reflects its commitment to fostering high-quality, application-oriented talent with strong moral character, solid theoretical foundations, and innovative capabilities. Kunming University is one of the first institutions in Yunnan to foster socialist core values and implement comprehensive reforms in education. It has trained large numbers of professionals who are quick to adapt, possess strong capabilities, and contribute to society.
Currently, the university employs 1,547 staff, including 1,115 full-time teachers. Of these, more than 530 hold senior academic titles, and approximately 38% have doctoral degrees. The university also employs 444 teachers with dual qualifications in engineering or industry, representing 40% of the teaching staff. The university has 417 supervisors for master's students and employs 150 experts, including recipients of special government allowances and scholars from Yunnan Province.
The university consists of 20 academic units offering 65 undergraduate programs across 11 disciplines, including economics, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and arts. It also offers 11 master’s degree programs. Five modern industry colleges are under construction, and 23 programs have been approved as part of the national "Double Ten Thousand Plan" for top-tier undergraduate programs. Among them, five programs, including Early Childhood Education, Physics, Hotel Management, Chinese Language and Literature, and Music, have been recognized as national-level first-class programs.
Research and Community Service
Kunming University has steadily enhanced its scientific research capabilities and focused on improving the quality of its academic disciplines. In the past six years, the university has launched 71 national projects and 314 provincial projects, with total research funding reaching 380 million yuan. It has won 20 provincial-level research awards, including a first-place award in 2022 for science and technology. The university has also published 1,859 papers, filed 630 patents, and published 46 books. It operates 10 provincial-level research platforms, including Yunnan Province's key laboratories and engineering research centers.
Kunming University has played an active role in serving society, conducting high-quality decision-making and consulting projects such as the "South Asia and Southeast Asia Medical and Health Center" proposal and "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor" security report. It has also successfully completed poverty alleviation tasks in various regions such as Honghe, Dongchuan, and Luquan counties. One of its education poverty alleviation projects, "Children's University Education for Poverty Alleviation," was selected as a national model case.
International Exchange and Cooperation
The university has deepened its international exchange and cooperation, particularly under the framework of the "Belt and Road" initiative. It has established a "China-SCO Youth Exchange Center" as a platform for cultural and educational exchanges with South Asia and Southeast Asia. The university runs an international college and offers education to students from 29 countries, with an emphasis on vocational skills training for international students. It has received recognition as a provincial vocational training brand.
Domestically, Kunming University has signed cooperation agreements with several prestigious universities, including Nanjing University, Lanzhou University, and the University of International Business and Economics, and works on talent development, scientific research, and faculty training.
The university has also established a Nie Er Music Academy, reflecting its commitment to promoting red culture and the legacy of the composer of the national anthem. Furthermore, the university collaborates with the University of International Business and Economics and the Kunming Free Trade Zone to build the country's first free trade college offering both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Standing at a new historical starting point, Kunming University will continue to be guided by Xi Jinping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for the new era. It will implement the party’s educational policies and align itself with national strategies for scientific and technological innovation, talent development, and the drive for innovation. The university aims to become a comprehensive, application-oriented, and distinctive institution, serving Kunming, Yunnan, and beyond, and contributing to the development of South Asia and Southeast Asia.
