Taiyuan Institute of Technology is located in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province. Administered by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government, it is a full-time regular undergraduate university that is predominantly engineering-focused and characterized by applied engineering. It covers various academic disciplines including engineering, science, economics, management, arts, and education, which support each other and develop in a coordinated manner. The institute is supported by the national "13th Five-Year Plan" Applied Undergraduate Industry-Education Integration Development Project. It is also among the first batch of pilot universities in Shanxi Province designated for transformation into an applied university, and a demonstration university for deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education in the province.
The institute was founded in 1954. Originally named North China Fifth Industrial School, it was a national key specialized secondary school established to meet the needs of national defense construction during China's first "Five-Year Plan" period. It was upgraded to a junior college in 1988 and began enrolling undergraduate students in 1999. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was independently established as a provincial public full-time undergraduate university and renamed "Taiyuan Institute of Technology." In 2015, it passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching quality assessment, and it is a designated project construction unit for master's degree authorization in Shanxi Province. Since 2016, the institute has signed joint master's training agreements with North University of China, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, and Taiyuan Normal University. In 2023, as a pilot institution in Shanxi Province, it passed the Ministry of Education's new round of undergraduate education and teaching audit assessment with high quality. Over the past 70 years, inheriting the fine tradition of the military industry, the institute has practiced the motto of "Unity of Knowledge and Action, Actions Speak Louder Than Words," and carried forward the spirit of "Loyal Dedication, Pragmatic Action, Continuous Self-Improvement, and Forging Ahead with Innovation." It has trained nearly 100,000 highly qualified, applied talents for the national defense industry and national economic construction, who possess high moral character, professional capability, innovative spirit, entrepreneurial awareness, and practical abilities, and who are well-rounded in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education.
The campus covers an area of 392,700 square meters, with a total building area of 378,900 square meters. The total value of fixed assets is 1.189 billion yuan, of which the total value of teaching and research equipment is 269 million yuan. The library holds 2.4271 million books (including 961,600 electronic books). Various teaching, living, and sports facilities are well-equipped, and supporting service facilities are continuously being improved.
The institute consists of 11 teaching departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Automation, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Environment and Safety Engineering, Materials Engineering, Science, Economics and Management, Design Art, and Physical Education. It also has 3 teaching divisions: the School of Marxism, the Foreign Languages Department, and the Continuing Education Department. Currently, it offers 51 undergraduate majors, enrolling students from 28 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across the country, with 16,429 full-time students. There are 1,055 staff members, including 916 full-time teachers. Among the faculty, 317 have senior professional titles, 5 are second-tier professors, 102 are master's supervisors, 303 hold doctoral degrees, and 873 hold master's degrees or above. The faculty includes 1 National Outstanding Educator, 1 talent from the Ministry of Education's "New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Program," and 26 high-level provincial talents such as Shanxi Province "131" Leading Talents, Outstanding Young Academic Leaders, "Sanjin Talents," and Provincial Teaching Masters. There are also 232 "dual-qualified" teachers. Furthermore, the institute has flexibly introduced 3 national-level talents and employs renowned domestic and foreign experts and scholars as honorary, special, part-time, and visiting professors.
Centered on the educational philosophy of "Fostering Virtue through Education, Strengthening Practice, Highlighting Application, and Serving Society," the institute carries out applied undergraduate education and teaching. It continuously accelerates the construction of applied majors, leading the new development pattern of the institute through discipline and major construction. It boasts 1 comprehensive reform pilot major for local universities under the Ministry of Education's "Undergraduate Teaching Project," 7 provincial-level advantageous and characteristic majors, 8 provincial first-class major construction points, 5 provincial key supported disciplines, 1 advantageous characteristic discipline under Shanxi Province's "1331 Project," and 1 cultivation project under Shanxi Province's "Service Industry Innovation Discipline Group Construction Plan." It also has 1 national first-class course, 1 national first-class undergraduate course, 16 provincial elite resource-sharing courses, 10 recognized provincial first-class courses, 10 under construction, and 9 under cultivation. It features 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 1 recognized virtual simulation experimental project, 1 project under construction, and 1 provincial talent training model innovation experimental zone. The institute has built 15 teaching experimental centers and 173 off-campus internship and training bases. Textbooks such as Visual C++ Programming and Hands-on Guidance and Fundamentals of Computer Graphics (Visual C++ Edition) have been listed as national planning textbooks. Since 2017, the institute has won 25 Shanxi Province Teaching Achievement Awards and 34 various teaching reform awards at different levels, including the National College Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition and the Young and Middle-Aged Teacher Teaching Basic Skills Competition (comprising 3 national and 31 provincial awards). In the "2025 CUAA Ranking of First-Class Majors in Chinese Universities (Applied)," the institute has 1 China six-star major, 5 five-star majors, 8 four-star majors, and 15 three-star majors, ranking 5th in the province.
Adhering to a goal-oriented approach centered on cultivating practical abilities, the institute continuously improves its "National-Regional-Provincial-Institutional" discipline competition system, popularizes innovation and entrepreneurship education, and strives to enhance the employment competitiveness of applied talents. The institute's robotics team has reached the national top 16 eight times in ten years, won the championships of the 13th and 24th National College Student Robotics Competitions, and was awarded the "Shanxi Youth May Fourth Medal" by the Provincial Youth League Committee. It has achieved outstanding results in more than 50 national events, such as the China International College Students' Innovation Competition, the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, the National University Student Intelligent Car Racing, and the Chinese Collegiate Computing Competition. From 2019 to 2021, it ranked in the TOP 10% of the National Undergraduate Universities Robotics Competition Index for three consecutive years, and was rated as National A-level in both 2022 and 2023. It has made the top 100 single-year list in the National General College Student Competitions four times, and its average annual ranking entered the top 100 in the 2019-2023 National General College Student Competition Ranking, making it the only newly-established local undergraduate university in the country on that list, ranking 76th in 2022. The institute's typical experience in training applied talents has garnered widespread social attention and high recognition, and the China Education Daily published a special report on its applied talent training model. In 2019, it was approved as a Shanxi Province "Provincial Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Demonstration Base," becoming the 5th "University and Research Institute" innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration construction unit in the province. In 2023, it served as the vice-chairman unit of the Newly Established Applied Undergraduate Universities Alliance 23 and the Local Applied Undergraduate Universities Alliance of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia-Shanxi Border Region. It has become a demonstration zone and a new high ground for innovation and entrepreneurship education practices in the fields of "new materials, new energy, and intelligent manufacturing" in the province, further demonstrating its educational characteristics of "promoting teaching through practice, promoting learning through competition, integrating industry and education, and excelling in both morality and skills."
Following the principles of "Demand-Oriented and Deep Integration," the institute strengthens interdisciplinary (group) integration and promotes the integrated development of "Industry-University-Research-Application." Using the construction of collaborative innovation centers as a carrier, it continuously strengthens external exchanges and cooperation; deepens close ties and resource sharing with research institutes, industry enterprises, and other universities; introduces various social resources, gathers innovative elements, stimulates innovation vitality, and promotes the collaborative "four-in-one" development of talent cultivation, discipline construction, scientific research, and social service, further boosting Shanxi's regional economic development and industrial transformation and upgrading. It has been approved for the Level III Confidentiality Qualification for Scientific Research and Production of Weapons and Equipment and the Record Certificate for Scientific Research and Production of Weapons and Equipment. Currently, it has 1 Taiyuan City Academician Workstation, 1 Provincial Development and Reform Commission Helicopter Intelligent Manufacturing Key Technology Engineering Research Center, 1 Provincial Department of Science and Technology Biomass Green Methanol Conversion and Hydrogen Energy Utilization Department-City Co-constructed Shanxi Province Key Laboratory Cultivation Base, 2 Provincial "1331 Project" Collaborative Innovation Centers for New Functional Materials and CO₂ Conversion and Utilization, 2 Provincial "1331 Project" Clean and Renewable Energy and Provincial Department of Education College Intelligent Detection and Control Engineering (Technology) Research Centers, 2 Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology Digital Design and Manufacturing and Energy Storage New Materials Science and Technology Innovation Centers, 1 Provincial Department of Science and Technology Carbon Dioxide Geological Storage Technology Innovation Center, and 1 Provincial Science Popularization Base. In 2022, it was awarded the Capek Prize "Top 50 Chinese Universities in Industry-Education Integration." The integration of industry and education is deepening day by day, and its ability to serve regional industries and enterprises is continuously growing. The quantity and quality of authorized patents, SCI/EI indexed papers, monographs, and other scientific and technological achievements are improving year by year. The channels for establishing scientific research projects are constantly broadening, and horizontal funding has significantly increased. Notably, continuous breakthroughs have been made in National Natural Science Foundation projects, National Social Science Foundation projects, and Shanxi Province major scientific research emergency projects, steadily enhancing its capacity to serve regional economic and social development. In the 2024 ShanghaiRanking's Best Chinese Universities Ranking, the institute ranked 523rd overall nationally, and 14th in Shanxi Province.
The institute implements an "Internationalization Strategy Project," actively expanding channels for international exchange and continuously increasing its efforts in international exchange and cooperation. It has successively carried out multi-level international exchange and cooperation in talent cultivation with several universities in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and South Korea, creating favorable conditions for students to study abroad, for teachers to go overseas for exchange and advanced studies, and for the introduction of high-quality foreign teaching and research resources.
The institute has built a "multi-level, full-coverage" cultural communication platform, actively leveraging the educational function of its environment, and striving to create a civilized, harmonious, and healthy campus cultural atmosphere. Standing at a new starting point and embarking on a new journey, the institute will, guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and under the strong leadership of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial Government, the Provincial Party Committee Education Working Committee, and the Provincial Department of Education, implement the "123" development strategy. It will remain true to its original aspiration, keep its mission firmly in mind, fear no hardships, and forge ahead bravely, to make new contributions to Shanxi's new journey of comprehensively promoting high-quality development, and to strive hard to build a high-level applied industrial university with distinct characteristics that is first-class in the region.
