Hunan Institute of Traffic Engineering is located in Hengyang, a historical and cultural city in China. It is a full-time undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education. Its predecessor was the Hengyang Zhongnan Technical School, founded in 1991, which was granted the authority to confer bachelor's degrees in 2018.
After 32 years of development, the university has formed distinct characteristics in its education and a comprehensive academic structure. It currently consists of 10 secondary teaching and research units, including the College of Traffic Engineering, College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, College of Electrical and Information Engineering, College of Economics and Management, College of Medical Technology and Nursing, College of Humanities and Arts, College of Marxism, Department of Public Foundation Courses, High-Tech Research Institute, and College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The university actively supports China’s “Made in China 2025” and “Internet+” action plans, aligning its academic programs with local industrial clusters to meet the demand for skilled professionals in regional economic development. It offers 30 undergraduate majors, with a focus on engineering and balanced development across disciplines such as management, medicine, economics, arts, and literature. It has established two provincial-level applied characteristic disciplines, one provincial-level comprehensive reform pilot program, five provincial-level first-class undergraduate programs, and 23 provincial-level first-class courses.
The university has a dual-qualified faculty team composed of professors, doctoral holders, overseas innovative talents, and industry experts. Currently, it has 1,225 staff members, including 902 full-time faculty, with 615 being full-time staff. Among the faculty, 328 have senior professional titles, and 127 hold doctoral degrees. It has 4 experts who enjoy special allowances from the State Council, 4 national outstanding teachers, 10 provincial excellent teachers, 6 provincial new century 121 talent experts, 15 young backbone teachers, and 17 high-level talents from Hengyang. To accelerate the “Double First-Class” development, the university has established the High-Tech Research Institute with a high starting point, high level, and high standard, hiring over 100 doctoral professors from the National University of Defense Technology. It currently has 14,748 full-time students.
The university occupies 1,265.43 acres, with a total building area of 438,700 square meters. Its teaching and research equipment is valued at 126.41 million yuan, with 1.22 million printed books, 1.94 million e-books, 1,022 types of printed journals, and 20 databases.
The university is equipped with advanced experimental devices and software, and it has established large-scale traffic simulation training centers, automotive testing and maintenance, and electrical engineering and electronics national-level training bases. It has been approved as a provincial-level innovation and incubation base for student projects. The university has 9 well-equipped experimental (training) centers, 6 provincial-level university-industry cooperation innovation and entrepreneurship education bases, and 6 innovation and entrepreneurship education centers. It has built 109 off-campus internship and training bases, effectively meeting the practical teaching needs of undergraduates.
Since upgrading to a full university in 2014, the university has initiated 497 national and provincial-level projects, including one National Natural Science Foundation project, one key project under the National Education Science Planning, and published 1,594 academic papers in SCI, EI, CSSCI, etc. Faculty members have obtained 192 patents, 281 software copyrights, and published 77 books and 143 textbooks. The university integrates research results into teaching and has seen significant progress in discipline development. From 2020 to 2022, the university undertook 62 provincial-level teaching reform research projects and 12 curriculum ideological and political construction research projects, winning 6 provincial-level teaching achievement awards. In April 2023, the Chen Xingguang Teaching Team won first place in the first National College Teacher Engineering Maker Teaching Ability Competition.
The university places great emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship education, strengthening the role of academic competitions in fostering students' innovative abilities and promoting the idea that entrepreneurship drives employment. The employment rates of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 graduating classes were 83.38%, 91.13%, and 86.06%, respectively, all higher than the provincial average for undergraduate institutions. From 2020 to 2022, 58 national-level student innovation and entrepreneurship training projects and 117 provincial-level projects were approved, along with 40 Ministry of Education Industry-Academia Cooperation Projects. The pass rate for nursing qualification exams was 99.14%, 100%, and 98.20%, higher than the provincial and national averages. Over the past 3 years, over 35,600 students participated in various academic competitions, winning 68 national-level competition awards. In 2021, the university won a gold medal in the "Smart Logistics Handling" category of the China University Engineering Practice and Innovation Competition, as well as a national first prize in the National College Student Electronics Design Competition. It also won 419 provincial-level competition awards, including 74 first prizes.
The university adheres to its motto, “Integrity, Thoughtfulness, Strong Capability, and Dedication,” focusing on the cultivation of applied talents, with widespread recognition for its educational standards and talent development. It has received multiple honors, including recognition from the Ministry of Education for excellent talent cultivation, "One-Stop" employment and entrepreneurship work, and being named a "Civilized University" and "Lawn Campus" in Hunan. It also won several awards for its contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Guided by Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the university insists on socialist educational values, integrating moral education with academic pursuits, and embedding talent development into its teaching and research practices. The Party organization and its work cover all aspects of the university, with 21 grassroots Party branches meeting the standards for the "Five-Harmonization" construction. In 2021, the university's Party Committee was awarded the "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization" in Hengyang, and its Electromechanical College Student Party Branch was named a "Model Branch" in the province.
