Nanjing Xiaozhuang University is a full-time public undergraduate institution jointly established by Jiangsu Province and Nanjing City, under the administration of Nanjing Municipality. The university traces its origins to the "Xiaozhuang Experimental Rural Normal School," founded in 1927 by Tao Xingzhi, a prominent educator. Recognized as the birthplace of rural teacher education in China, it embodies the spirit of modern Chinese educators. In 1951, with approval from Premier Zhou Enlai, Nanjing Xiaozhuang Normal School was reestablished. In 2000, Nanjing Xiaozhuang Normal School merged with Nanjing Normal Junior College and Nanjing Education College to form Nanjing Xiaozhuang University. In 2014, Nanjing Preschool Higher Normal School was integrated into the institution. By 2024, the university was approved as a master's degree-granting institution.
Over the past century, Nanjing Xiaozhuang University has contributed significantly to educational reform and development, aligning closely with the revival of the Chinese nation. Esteemed educators such as Tao Xingzhi, Cai Yuanpei, Zhao Shuyu, Chen Heqin, and others have taught here. Emphasizing Tao Xingzhi’s educational philosophy, the university upholds the motto "Unity of Teaching, Learning, and Doing," promotes the ethos "Teach people to seek truth, learn to be true individuals," and embodies the spirit of selfless dedication: "Bring a heart, leave nothing behind." Over 97 years, it has nurtured approximately 200,000 foundational education professionals and specialized talents, including numerous renowned teachers and educational leaders, earning the reputation as the “cradle of primary and secondary school teachers.”
Campuses and Academic Structure
The university operates three campuses: Fangshan, Mochou, and Xiaozhuang (Xingzhi Garden), the latter being the original site of Tao Xingzhi’s school. It covers nearly 1,500 acres, housing 15 professional schools across nine disciplines, including Education, Literature, History, Economics, Law, Science, Engineering, Management, and Art. The university offers 44 undergraduate programs and three professional master's degree programs. Nine majors have been recognized as national first-class undergraduate programs, and ten as provincial first-class programs. Currently, there are 18,000 full-time undergraduates and over 130 joint doctoral and master’s students.
Faculty and Research Achievements
The university has 1,432 staff members, including 1,100 full-time faculty, with 572 holding doctoral degrees and 538 holding senior professional titles. Among its ranks are distinguished educators and researchers recognized nationally and provincially. The university has twice received the second prize in the National Teaching Achievement Awards for higher education and has achieved significant research accomplishments, including over 60 national-level projects and more than 2,000 high-quality academic papers in the last five years.
Student-Centered Education and Achievements
Nanjing Xiaozhuang University prioritizes student development, emphasizing values education and practical skills. Over the past three years, students have won more than 1,000 awards in provincial and national competitions. The university is recognized as an "A-level university" in graduate employment evaluations.
